Treaty of Waitangi

 We have been learning about the Treaty of Waitangi .  Here are some questions and the answers about the Treaty of Waitangi .



1. When was the Treaty of Waitangi signed ?

In 1840 on the 6th of February .


2.  Who was the treaty between ?

An agreement between the British Crown and 500 Maori chiefs .


3.  are two documents of the treaty .  How many Maori chiefs signed the English version of the treaty? How many Maori chiefs signed the Maori version of the treaty ? How come ?


  1.  Less than 40 chiefs signed the English version of the Treaty .  2 .  500 Maori chiefs signed the Maori version of the treaty .  3. Because  Maori couldn't read or speak English.


4.   Why was the Treaty written ?

To stop the fighting, arguing and to bring peace to the land.

6.   What is the difference between a treaty and a law ?

A treaty is an agreement .   A law is a rule that everyone in New Zealand has to follow .
