Tsunami Warning
On the 5th of March 2021 there was a Tsunami alert. My class was in the middle of maths when the alarms went off. I got a huge fright. I had never heard the alarms before. Suddenly the students in my class were rushing past me I had been so busy focusing on what the bell meant that I hadn’t heard the teacher say “go and get your bags!” Later we all were standing under the shade of the gazebo. About 7 minutes later all of the school was seated in the school whare. I was still wondering what the bell meant when the teachers told Te Kakano and Te Pihi to stand up and walk out the door of the whare . Later all of the classes were walking on the edge of the road.
After a few minutes of walking on the road we turned and went up the maunga next to our school. There were bunches of gorse scattered around the path we were following. As we climbed higher I could hear some tamiriki squealing with pain as the gorse pricked their feet. l could also feel the gorse pricking my feet. After a few more minutes of walking we sat down and later all of us were having a snack. I had my muesli bar and a biscuit. After I had finished eating I started to play with my little doll named Rapunzel. Her hair is really soft. She's my little lucky charm. I was lucky I had her with me today!
Later, the teachers told us that we were going to move to the highest point of the maunga. Now that was a short but hard walk to the top of the maunga, it was a little bit steep, well at least there wasn’t much gorse. Finally we reached the top. Me and my friends went to a lower part of the maunga. A couple of the boys put their heads in their bags and had a small nap. As I looked uphill I saw a big water container that some tamariki were getting some water out to drink. Later me and some other girls played spy. After I spy a few of the girls started styling each other's hair. I joined in and did Lucy's hair while Kaydee did Mihi’s hair. Just as I finished we were told to go to a lower part of the maunga.
This was because the gazebos had been brought up and they needed some lower ground. As we made our way down I noticed that this part of the maunga was a little bit steeper. But when we reached the end it was absolutely flat. After a snack we played hand games and I brushed my dolls hair (Edmon did a little bit too). When I looked up next the sausage sizzle was there. After a few minutes the teachers announced that all the children in our school were allowed to have a sausage each. Soon the delicious smell of sausage wafted along the fresh breeze. We had a sausage each and started to head back toback to school. We climbed over a gate and walked back to school through a field. We were all tired but happy what a fantastic day.
